Common Raven (Northern Raven)

Species

Corvus corax (High confidence based on size and structure)

Feather Type

Flight feather (Rectrix - Tail feather)

Family

Corvidae (Crows, Jays, and Magpies)

Shape

Slightly asymmetrical but largely broad and tapered toward the tip; rounded apex. The lack of significant aerodynamic asymmetry suggests a tail feather rather than a primary wing feather.

Size

Estimated 20-30 cm (8-11 inches). This falls within the upper range for corvids, significantly larger than typical American Crow tail feathers (which range 13-19 cm).

Rarity

Common in appropriate habitat, though less frequent in heavily urbanized Eastern US regions compared to the American Crow.

Color & Pattern

Uniformly deep iridescent black. Under specific lighting, a subtle violet or blue sheen may be visible. The ventral (underside) surface is slightly more matte gray-black. The rachis is dark pigmented.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane. The base shows a small plumulaceous (fuzzy) section for insulation near the calamus. The barbs are stiff and resilient.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, glossy, and very stiff. The surface is highly resistant to water due to preen oils. It feels substantial and durable compared to smaller songbird feathers.

Description

A massive all-black passerine, the Common Raven is the largest perching bird in the world. They feature wedge-shaped tails in flight and heavy, powerful bills. This feather represents the bird’s aerial agility and resilience in harsh environments.

Key Features

Large size, deep black pigmentation with structural iridescence, stiff rachis, and the characteristic width of a Raven rectrix.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; found in dense forests, high mountains, desert canyons, Arctic tundra, and increasingly in rural and suburban areas.

Geographic Range

Widespread throughout the Northern Hemisphere; found across North America from the high Arctic to Mexico, as well as throughout Eurasia and North Africa.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is slight separation of the barbs (zipper effect) mid-vane and some wear at the tip, suggesting it was molted naturally at the end of a season.

Interesting Facts

Ravens are considered among the most intelligent animals, capable of tool use, problem-solving, and mimicking human speech. They can perform mid-air rolls and even fly upside down for brief periods.

Ecological Role

Apex scavenger and opportunistic predator; significant in nutrient cycling and sometimes as a seed disperser. They are vital 'cleaners' of the landscape.

Similar Species

American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) feathers are smaller and less stiff. Chihuahuan Raven (Corvus cryptoleucus) feathers have white bases, which this specimen lacks.
