Description
This is a soft, buff-gray contour feather from a Mourning Dove. The bird is slender-tailed and small-headed, known for its mournful 'coo-ah, coo, coo' call and the whistles its wings make during takeoff.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform soft brownish-gray to buffy-tan. It lacks the dark spots seen on wing coverts or the white tips of trial feathers, typical of a mid-body contour feather.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous at the upper two-thirds for weatherproofing, with a plumulaceous (fluffy) base for insulation. Barbs are tightly interlocked except at the very bottom.
Texture & Surface
Extremely soft and silky to the touch with a matte finish. Dove feathers are known for a powdery texture due to specialized down.
Key Features
Soft buff-gray coloration, symmetrical oval shape, silky texture, and the absence of any barring or spotting.
Habitat
Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban backyards, grasslands, and light woods. They avoid deep, unbroken forests.
Geographic Range
Abundant across North America, from southern Canada through Central America and the Caribbean. Most populations are resident, though northern birds migrate south.
Ecological Role
Primary seed eaters (granivores), serving as a vital link in the food chain for raptors such as Cooper's Hawks. They are also important seed dispersers.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (slightly paler/grayer) and White-winged Dove (larger, often with more distinct white or dark markings).
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves can drink brackish water and are capable of 'sucking up' water without tilting their heads back, unlike most other birds. They are also incredibly prolific breeders.
Condition Notes
Excellent condition. The feather appears freshly molted with no visible fault bars, wear, or evidence of parasite damage.
