Feral Pigeon (also known as the Rock Pigeon or Rock Dove)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Columbiformes, Family: Columbidae, Genus: Columba, Species: Columba livia · Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves) · Secondary flight feather (Remex)

Species
Columba livia (High confidence based on morphology and coloration)
Feather Type
Secondary flight feather (Remex)
Family
Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
Shape
Slightly asymmetrical with a rounded-to-blunt tip. The inner vane is broader than the outer vane, typical of secondary feathers which provide lift.
Size
Estimated 4-5 inches (10-12 cm) in length. This is consistent with the standard range for a rock pigeon's inner wing feathers.
Rarity
Very Common; one of the most widely distributed and abundant bird species on Earth.
Color & Pattern
Solid brownish-grey to charcoal-grey base. It lacks the distinctive dark terminal bands of some outer tail feathers, suggesting a 'blue-bar' or 'checkered' morph. The ventral side (underside) is typically lighter/silvery.
Barb Structure
The distal portion is pennaceous with tightly interlocked barbs (velcro-like) for flight efficiency, while the proximal base (near the calamus) is plumulaceous (downy) for insulation.
Texture & Surface
The surface is smooth and slightly matte with a waxy/oily feel characteristic of pigeons, which produce a specialized powder down to waterproof their plumage.
Description
This is a sturdy secondary flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with large crops and small heads. Their plumage is incredibly diverse due to domestication, ranging from blue-grey with iridescent neck feathers to rusty reds and whites. In flight, they are fast and direct with loud wing claps during takeoff.
Key Features
Rounded tip, moderately stiff rachis, solid grey-brown pigment without barring, and a downy base characteristic of the Columbidae family.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; found in urban city centers, farmyards, cliffs, and coastal bridge structures.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; resident on every continent except Antarctica. Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, but widely introduced.
Condition Notes
The feather appears to be in Good condition. There are minor separations in the barbs (splits) near the mid-section, likely due to mechanical wear or the molting process.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers in both World Wars due to their incredible homing ability.
Ecological Role
Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also serve as significant seed dispersers and scavengers in human-altered environments.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered tip), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey, different proportions), and various small hawks (which would typically have distinct banding).
