Mourning Dove (also known as the Carolina Dove or American Mourning Dove)

The Mourning Dove is one of the most abundant and familiar birds in North America, easily recognized by its graceful, slender shape, long pointed tail, and soft grey-brown plumage. Famous for its distinctive, mournful cooing song, this bird is a frequent visitor to backyard bird feeders and rural roadsides alike. They are strong, fast fliers capable of reaching speeds up to 55 mph, producing a characteristic whistling sound with their wings upon takeoff.

Soft, uniform grayish-blue to brownish-gray coloration across the main vane, created by a mix of melanin pigmentation. The basal portion exhibits white to pale gray downy barbs. The rachis is pale whitish-gray.

Pennaceous at the upper distal end with tightly interlocked barbicels, transitioning into a soft, plumulaceous (fluffy downy) structure at the proximal base.

Silky and soft to the touch with a matte finish. The upper vane is smooth and neat, while the base is fluffy and loose.

Uniform soft grey-brown coloration, rounded tip, slender white-tinted rachis, and the distinctive fluffy plumulaceous base characteristic of columbid body contour feathers.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, prairies, urban areas, and open woodlands, avoiding dense unbroken forests.

Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into Central America, as well as the Greater Antilles. Northern populations migrate southward for the winter.

Serves as an important seed disperser and a primary prey species for various raptors, falcons, and mammalian predators, playing a vital role in the grassland and woodland food webs.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). Distinguishing features include slightly different shade gradients and smaller scale compared to pigeon feathers.

Mourning Doves drink by suction rather than sipping and tilting their heads back like most birds, allowing them to drink continuously without interruption. They are also prolific breeders, with pairs sometimes raising up to six broods in a single year in warmer regions.

Good condition with intact barbs and minimal wear, suggesting it is a fresh contour feather likely dropped during natural molt.
