Colour & Pattern
Dorsal side is a rich rufous-orange (brick red) with a thin subterminal dark band near the tip. Ventral side is paler, almost pinkish-white. The rachis is light-colored at the base, darkening toward the tip.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous and tightly interlocked throughout most of the vane; plumulaceous (downy) at the base (superior umbilicus).
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat stiff to the touch; the surface has a slight matte finish with high durability and wind resistance.
Key Features
Solid rufous-red coloration on the upper surface and the presence of a faint dark subterminal band near the tip.
Habitat
Found in a variety of open and semi-open habitats, including grasslands, deserts, pastures, parklands, broken woodlands, and roadsides.
Geographic Range
Common year-round resident throughout North America, ranging from Alaska and Canada down through Central America.
Ecological Role
Apex predator; plays a vital role in controlling rodent and small mammal populations within its ecosystem.
Similar Species
Ferruginous Hawk (longer, lack the subterminal band), Red-shouldered Hawk (banded black and white), Harris's Hawk (dark brown with white base/tip).
Interesting Facts
The scream of the Red-tailed Hawk is so iconic and 'wild' that Hollywood movies almost always use its recording for any eagle or hawk shown on screen, regardless of the actual species.
Condition Notes
Good condition; minor fraying at the tip and edges suggests natural wear from flight or preening before being molted.
