Description

This feather belongs to the Mourning Dove, a medium-sized, slender bird known for its mournful 'coo-oo' song. The bird is typically grayish-brown with black spots on the wings and a long, pointed tail tipped in white. Their flight is fast and direct, often accompanied by a distinct whistling sound made by the wings.

Colour & Pattern

Soft grayish-brown base with three distinct dark brownish-charcoal bands. The rachis is pale cream to white. The dorsal surface shows clear melanin banding, while the ventral surface is slightly paler.

Barb Structure

Mostly pennaceous (tightly interlocked) at the distal end for wind resistance, transitioning to plumulaceous (fluffy) near the base for insulation. Smooth barbicels.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and silky to the touch with a soft, matte finish characteristic of Columbids. It lacks the oily sheen of waterfowl feathers.

Key Features

Soft grayish-tan coloration, multiple dark subterminal bands, and a pale, flexible rachis. The rounded tip and velvet-like texture are diagnostic for doves.

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban backyards, grasslands, and light woods.

Geographic Range

Abundant throughout North America from southern Canada to central Mexico; northern populations are migratory while southern ones are year-round residents.

Ecological Role

Primary seed consumers; they play a role in seed dispersal but are also a critical prey base for many hawks, falcons, and owls.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (lacks the dark spotting/banding in the same pattern), White-winged Dove (larger, more uniform gray in this specific feather type).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are one of the few birds that can drink water by suction without tilting their heads back. They also produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, which is highly nutritious.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. The distal edges show some slight fraying and separation of barbs, suggesting it was molted recently or weathered on the ground.
