Description

This is a small, soft body feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short legs, and a small head. Pigeons are famous for their varied plumage, ranging from the classic blue-grey with iridescent neck feathers to white, red, and pied patterns. They are known for their 'cooing' vocalizations and strong homing instincts.

Colour & Pattern

Bi-colored transition. The tip is a dark charcoal or sooty black, fading into a brownish-grey mid-section, and ending in a white or creamy downy base. There is no distinct banding, which is typical of the highly variable 'checker' or 'blue bar' feral morphs.

Barb Structure

The distal (top) half is pennaceous and interlocked, while the proximal (bottom) half is plumulaceous (downy) and loose for insulation. The barbs are relatively intact but show typical separation common in molted body feathers.

Texture & Surface

The upper pennaceous portion is smooth and slightly stiff, while the lower plumulaceous portion is very soft and silky. The surface has a matte appearance without significant iridescence, which is typical for flank feathers.

Key Features

The distinctive soft, white downy base transitioning into a dark, rounded tip; the relatively broad width compared to its short length; and the lack of sharp tapering found in passerine feathers.

Habitat

Extremely varied; primarily urban and suburban environments, farmyards, and rocky cliffs. They are highly adapted to human-made structures.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; found on every continent except Antarctica. They are year-round residents in most of their range and do not perform long-distance migrations.

Ecological Role

As a primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks, they play a vital role in supporting urban biodiversity. They also act as scavengers of human food waste.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are typically slimmer, more pointed, and usually a warmer tan/buff color throughout without the dark tip. Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) feathers are a more uniform sandy-grey.

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated by humans, dating back over 5,000 years. They were used extensively in both World Wars to carry vital messages across enemy lines.

Condition Notes

Good condition. It appears to be a natural molt. There is some minor separation of the barbs at the tip, likely due to wear before it was dropped.
