Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a graceful, slender-tailed bird known for its distinctive, mournful cooing call. Featuring soft pinkish-tan to greyish-brown plumage with dark spots on the wings and a long, graduated tail edged in white, it is one of the most familiar and abundant backyard birds across the continent.

Soft grayish-brown or soft taupe coloration with a uniform matte appearance typical of Columbids. Melanin-based pigments provide subtle, muted earth tones.

Pennaceous at the upper distal portion with tightly interlocked barbs, transitioning to plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) barbs at the proximal base. No prominent afterfeather.

Soft and silky near the base, smooth and pliable along the pennaceous upper vane. Matte finish with no excessive gloss or oiliness.

Soft grayish-brown coloration, rounded tip, and the characteristic transition from a smooth pennaceous vane to a fluffy, plumulaceous base without a prominent afterfeather.

Open country, urban areas, farms, prairies, roadside edges, and lightly wooded scrublands, avoiding dense interior forests.

Widespread across North America, from southern Canada through the contiguous United States into Mexico, Central America, and the Greater Antilles.

Primary granivores that feed extensively on weed seeds and waste grain, serving an important role in weed control and acting as a common prey base for raptors.

Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) and Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), though Pigeon feathers are typically larger and coarser, while Collared-Dove feathers are slightly paler grey-buff.

Mourning doves are exceptionally fast, agile flyers capable of reaching speeds up to 55 mph. They are also one of the few bird species that can drink water by suction without tilting their head back.
