The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful tail, soft grey-brown plumage, and distinctive black spots on the wings. Known for its mournful cooing call and whistling flight takeoffs.
Colour & Pattern
Dark grey-black central and proximal portions with a sharp, contrasting white or pale grey tip at the distal end. The underside is slightly paler, and the rachis is dark basally and lightens distally.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous structure along most of the vane with strong barbicels, transitioning to a slightly looser basal plumulaceous area near the quill.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, firm, and matte in appearance with a streamlined, aerodynamic finish typical of flight and steering feathers.
Key Features
The combination of a dark grey body with a sharply defined white tip on an elongated, narrow tail feather is diagnostic of outer tail feathers in the Mourning Dove.
Habitat
Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, prairies, and scrublands, avoiding dense forests and deep wetlands.
Geographic Range
Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into Central America, with Caribbean populations as well.
Ecological Role
Acts as an important seed disperser and a primary food source for various raptors and mammalian predators, functioning as a vital link in terrestrial food webs.
Similar Species
Passenger Pigeon (extinct), Eurasian Collared-Dove, and White-winged Dove, all of which have different tail patterns and lack the distinct stark white tips on graduated outer tail feathers found in Mourning Doves.
Interesting Facts
Mourning doves are one of the most widely distributed and abundant game birds in North America, capable of flying up to 55 mph in a straight line.
Condition Notes
Good condition with intact barbs and minimal fraying, showing standard wear typical of a naturally molted feather.
