Common Raven (Northern Raven, Crow-like Raven)

The Common Raven is the largest of all passerine birds, easily distinguished by its massive bill, wedge-shaped tail in flight, and deep, resonant croaking vocalizations. They are master acrobats of the sky, capable of rolling and even flying upside down.

Solid deep black with striking iridescent metallic purple, blue, and green sheens under direct sunlight, caused by structural coloration of the keratin microstructure rather than pigments.

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barb and barbule structure with strong hamuli (barbicels) providing structural integrity. Intact barbs with minimal fraying, typical of a healthy flight feather.

Stiff, smooth, glossy, and firm texture with a sleek, aerodynamic finish. The leading edge is stiffer and sharper than the softer, wider trailing edge.

Large size, deep solid black coloration with iridescent structural sheen (blue/purple), thick robust rachis, and strong asymmetry indicative of an outer wing flight feather from a very large bird.

Extremely adaptable, found in a wide variety of habitats including coniferous forests, arctic tundra, high-elevation alpine areas, deserts, agricultural lands, and increasingly around human settlements and towns.

Circumpolar distribution across the Northern Hemisphere. Found throughout most of North America, Europe, and Asia, inhabiting virtually every terrestrial ecosystem within its range as a year-round resident.

Acting primarily as omnivorous scavengers and apex avian generalists, ravens play a crucial role in nutrient recycling and ecosystem health while occasionally acting as predators of small vertebrates and eggs.

American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) or Fish Crow (Corvus ossifragus), but their flight feathers are significantly smaller, narrower, and generally lack the massive scale and intense iridescence of a large raven.

Ravens are among the most intelligent of all birds, known to solve complex puzzles, use tools, mimic human speech, and engage in elaborate play behavior. In mythology, they are frequently depicted as tricksters and creators.

Good to Excellent condition. The barbs are well-aligned, the rachis is intact without breaks, and there is minimal wear or sun-bleaching visible.
